Making the Book Cover Fabric
(1) Create multiple die cuts with the Paper
Sculpting Daisy die from heavy card stock. These will be
used for masking the muslin fabric.
(2) Place masks on the muslin fabric
and spray various colors of Color Wash around the images
to create a colorful background. Use the outside papers
from the die cuts as a reverse mask to spray Color Wash
directly onto the flower areas too. You can dampen the
fabric first with a spray bottle for softer colors
and/or blot with a paper towel for some variations.
Press with a warm iron to completely dry.
(3) Pour a few drops of the Color Wash
Spray Dye in a small cup with a small amount of water.
Mix well then add a little Perfect Fabric Medium to form
a thin paint. This paint will create lovely watercolor
effects and you will be able to control the application
with a brush. For a slightly luminous effect, add a
small amount of Perfect Pearls Sunflower Sparkle to the
paint colors.
(4) Lay clean die cut shapes over the
muslin fabric again, focusing on the area of the muslin
that will be the front of the book. Use a brush to apply
the paint around the shapes. Move the shapes around for
more effects. Use the paper from the outside of the cut
shapes as well to create reverse masked images. Save
paint for remaining instructions.
(5) Press on the wrong side of the
fabric to dry. Allow to dry completely.
Fabric Transfer - Flower Clip Art Image
(1) Cut out the color copy of flower leaving a
_” border all around.
(2) Apply Perfect Fabric Medium to the
front of the image with a brush. Brush in both
directions for good coverage and immediately place face
down on a second piece of muslin fabric and burnish to
be sure the edges are well adhered. Allow to dry for
several minutes, then take a warm iron to the other side
of the fabric (never iron directly on the transfer)
until completely dry.
(3) Place a piece of scrap paper over
the transfer and spray Color Wash around the image.
Dampen the fabric first with a spray bottle for softer
colors and/or blot with a paper towel for variation.
Press with a warm iron to completely dry.
(4) Remove the paper backing from the
image by spraying lightly with water and use a piece of
a kitchen sponge to LIGHTLY rub in a circular motion to
lift the paper. Dry with a warm iron and repeat the
process. It is very important to dry the transfer
between water applications.
(5) Use any remaining paint from the
book cover fabric to paint in the flower image as
desired.
(6) When dry, use Liquid Stitch to glue
the transfer to chipboard, mitering the corners over the
edges.
Tip: How much paper is removed depends on how
distressed you want the image to appear. Smooth fabrics
such as satin and chintz allow for a very smooth
transfer. Using muslin creates more of an aged and
distressed canvas effect.
Making the Faux Metal Frame for the Flower
Transfer
(1) Layer and glue together 3-5 pieces of black
card stock about _” larger (to create a frame) all
around from your transferred image.
(2) Mix Perfect Pearls Copper and
Bronze to form a creamy paint and paint the panel. While
it is wet, use the back of a brush and pound indents to
create a “hammered” metal look.
(3) When dry, lightly sand the edges
for a more distressed look. Layer the fabric transfer on
top of the frame with strong glue.
Making the “Polished Metal” Buckle and Photo
Corners
(1) Die cut 3-5 of photo corners with black
cardstock and glue one on top of the other. Repeat this
so that you have a layered photo corner for all four
corners of the Faux Metal Backing frame.
(2) Apply Perfect Medium liberally to
the top layer of each layered photo corner die cut.
(3) Shake Clear UTEE over the photo
corners and melt using Heat It Craft Tool.
(4) Rub Perfect Pearls pigment powders
over the UTEE surface to create a smooth, polished metal
effect.
(5) Attach Photo Corners to Faux Metal
Frame.
(6) Repeat steps 1 – 4 to create the
Buckle.
Assembling the Book
(1) Attach the painted fabric to the book or
box by brushing Liquid Stitch (you can thin it with a
little water) over the cover and quickly attaching the
fabric. Miter the corners and hold in place with a paper
clip or clamp until dry.
(2) Layer the Faux Metal Frame and
Fabric Transfer image using a strong tacky glue.
