Paint Mediums & Craft Paint

Another segment Ranger is widely known for is paint, including acrylic paint, gesso, mediums, and specialty finishes. Ranger Ink manufacturers acrylic paint under the Tim Holtz Distress®, Dylusions by Dyan Reaveley, and Dina Wakley MEdia brands, each developed with distinct properties to support different creative needs. Dry time, coverage, viscosity, opacity, blendability, and packaging vary by brand because every project requires a different purpose and technique. Each line also features its own color palette, with select metallic options.

Ranger Liquid Pearls

Liquid Pearls™ are a specialty paint that have a permanent pearlescent shimmer.  Pearls are versatile and can be used as a paint when applied with a paint brush or blending tool or also can be used as a dimensional accent or embellishment if used direct from the bottle.

Mediums for Mixed Media, Art, and Craft Projects

Mediums by definition are a type of material or supply used by an artist to create art. Ranger manufactures a broad selection of creative mediums, including paints, inks, texture pastes, and collage products. The Dina Wakley MEdia product line includes specialty mediums that make paint more workable, such as gel, gloss, and glazing mediums, allowing artists to alter performance and achieve specific effects.

If you've ever felt boxed in by plain acrylics, paint mediums are where things get interesting. This collection includes crackle mediums, iridescent finishes and texture-building options that change how paint behaves on your project, not just what color it ends up.

Our paint for crafting selection covers everything from smooth, blendable acrylics for backgrounds to specialty paints made for stenciling and layering. Add a crackle medium under a coat of color and watch it split into a weathered, antique finish. Mix in an iridescent medium, and your project picks up shimmer depending on the light.

These work well on cardstock, wood, canvas and fabric, so you're not limited to one kind of project. Mixed media artists lean on paint mediums to build up layers with real depth, while cardmakers use lighter paint for crafting applications to add color without weighing down the paper.

Once your paint is sorted, our texture paste collection is worth a look. It pairs beautifully with these mediums for even more dimension.

FAQs

What is the difference between Dina Wakley MEdia Paint, Dylusions Paint, and Tim Holtz Distress Paint?

Dina Wakley MEdia Craft Paints are thick, opaque, and buttery. So, they’re perfect for holding brushstrokes, peaks, and texture. They’re heavy-bodied, richly pigmented, and can be thinned for watercolor effects.

Dylusions Paints are fluid, blendable, and dry quickly to a matte finish. They’re great for art journalers, allowing for writing and doodling over the paint.

Tim Holtz Distress Paints are more fluid, water-reactive, and designed for vintage, textured effects. They come in flip-cap bottles with applicator tips for precise application.

What is gesso and do I need it before painting on my journal or card?

Gesso is a primer that gives paint a surface to grip, prevents paper from absorbing too much craft paint, and brightens colors.

Using gesso can produce smoother, more vibrant results.
