FAQs

What surfaces can you use alcohol ink on?

Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink works best on non-porous surfaces. That means Yupo (white or translucent), Alcohol Ink Cardstock, Foil Cardstock, Glossy Paper, as well as metal, glass and glazed tiles. Regular paper soaks up the ink and kills the flowing, organic effects that make alcohol ink so magical.

We also offer specialty surfaces like Black Matte Cardstock, Brushed Silver and Silver Sparkle Yupo, all designed to get the best results with your inks. Start with these and watch the colors dance across your page!

What's the difference between Alcohol Inks, Alcohol Pearls and Metallic Mixatives?
  • Alcohol Inks are translucent dyes that stay reactivatable. You can move and blend them with a blending solution to create flowing backgrounds.
  • Alcohol Pearls combine pigment and dye for permanent pearlescent effects. Once dry, they don’t lift or reactivate.
  • Metallic Mixatives are concentrated metallic or white inks meant to mix with base inks for shimmer or highlight effects.

Knowing the difference can really help you pick the right product for each effect, whether you want soft layers, sparkle or permanent shine.

What do you need to get started with alcohol ink art?

You really only need a few essentials to start experimenting: a few Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks, a non-porous surface like Yupo, some blending solution and an applicator tool or fillable pen. For beginners, the Alcohol Ink Kit is a great starting point.

Can you use alcohol ink in a spray bottle or airbrush?

We do not recommend using Alcohol Inks, Metallic Mixatives, Snow Cap Mixative or Alcohol Ink Blending Solution in spray bottles or airbrushes. These contain alcohol and shouldn’t be airborne for safety reasons.

Instead, try the applicator tool or fillable pen to safely apply ink to your project. You’ll get precise color placement and keep yourself safe. Plus, it’s easier to control your effects for beautiful results.
