FAQs

What is the difference between Alcohol Ink Pearls, Mixatives, Alloys and Neons?

These four specialty Alcohol Ink products each create unique effects:

  • Alcohol Pearls – fast-drying, permanent, pearlescent pigment and dye inks for pearlescent color layers.
  • Mixatives – highly pigmented metallic or white inks that blend with Alcohol Inks to create metallic highlights.
  • Alloys – reflective metallic inks with fine metal powders for intense metallic shine when layered with Alcohol Inks and Blending Solution.
  • Neons – bright, luminous and opaque pigment inks for bold pops of color on non-porous surfaces.

All are designed to enhance your standard Alcohol Inks, not replace them.

Can you mix Alcohol Pearls, Neons, Alloys and Mixatives with regular Alcohol Inks?

Yes! All four specialty products are fully compatible with standard Alcohol Inks. Use them together with Alcohol Ink Blending Solution to layer, blend and create effects you can’t achieve with a single product. For example, add Mixatives or Pearls to a background made with regular Alcohol Inks to create metallic or pearlescent highlights, or layer Neons for bright, vibrant accents. This interoperability encourages using multiple products in your project.

Why can't I use Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks in a spray bottle or airbrush?

Alcohol Inks and Mixatives contain alcohol, which is hazardous if airborne. We do not recommend using them in spray bottles or airbrushes. Instead, use the Tim Holtz Air Blower, a hand-held rubber squeeze bulb, to move ink across your surface safely without creating fumes. This keeps your workspace safe while still allowing fun ink manipulation techniques.

What surfaces work best with Alcohol Pearls, Neons and Alloys?

These inks perform best on non-porous surfaces where the inks can flow and blend:

  • Alcohol Pearls & Alloys: Yupo, Alcohol Ink Cardstock, Foil Cardstock, Glossy Paper, metal, glass and glazed tiles
  • Neons: similar non-porous surfaces for bold, vibrant effects

Avoid standard paper or porous cardstock, as these absorb the inks rather than letting them create the desired flowing or pearlescent look. Tim Holtz collections of Yupo, Hard-Core Art Panels, Dura-Lar and Alcohol Ink Cardstock are recommended substrates for best results.
