FAQs

Can you mix Alcohol Pearls, Neons, Alloys and Mixatives with regular Alcohol Inks?

Yes! All four specialty products are fully compatible with standard Alcohol Inks. Use them together with Alcohol Ink Blending Solution to layer, blend and create effects you can’t achieve with a single product. For example, add Mixatives or Pearls to a background made with regular Alcohol Inks to create metallic or pearlescent highlights, or layer Neons for bright, vibrant accents. This interoperability encourages using multiple products in your project.

Why can't I use Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks in a spray bottle or airbrush?

Alcohol Inks and Mixatives contain alcohol, which is hazardous if airborne. We do not recommend using them in spray bottles or airbrushes. Instead, use the Tim Holtz Air Blower, a hand-held rubber squeeze bulb, to move ink across your surface safely without creating fumes. This keeps your workspace safe while still allowing fun ink manipulation techniques.

What surfaces do alcohol inks work on?

Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks by Ranger are formulated for non-porous surfaces, like glossy cardstock, glass, metal, ceramic and more. They're not suited for regular paper, which is where they differ from water-based inks like Distress Inks.

What is a Mixative and how do you use it?

Mixatives are alcohol-based additives that blend with Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks to add metallic shimmer, shift color intensity or create special effects. Gold, Silver and Copper Mixatives can be dropped directly into wet ink or blended on your surface to create fluid, luminous results.

What's the difference between Alcohol Ink Pearls, Neons and Alloys?

Each formulation creates a distinct finish. Pearls deliver a soft, pearlescent sheen; Neons are high-intensity pigments that glow with saturated color. Alloys produce a metallic, foil-like effect. All three are alcohol-based and work on the same non-porous surfaces as core Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks.

Can alcohol inks be layered?

Absolutely, layering is one of the most exciting things you can do with Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks. Because they stay fluid and reactive, each color you add shifts and blends with what's underneath. This creates organic, one-of-a-kind patterns. Using a blending solution gives you even more control over movement and blending.

Do alcohol inks dry permanently?

Yes. Once it’s fully dry on a non-porous surface, Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks are permanent. However, they can be reactivated with alcohol-based products while wet, which makes blending and color shifting during the creative process very forgiving.
